Benjamin Smith’s practice focuses on litigation in the areas of ERISA disability benefit appeals and disability discrimination under the ADA, Rehabilitation Act, and state and local statutes. His practice also includes representing District of Columbia employees before the DC Office of Human Rights, the DC Commission on Human Rights, and the DC Office of Employee Appeals.

Before joining the firm, Mr. Smith clerked for the for the Honorable Louise M. Di Matteo at Arlington County Circuit Court. Mr. Smith took advantage of his opportunities in law school and gained practical experience at various internships. During law school, he worked as a judicial intern for the Honorable Florence Y. Pan at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, as well as for the Honorable Amy Berman Jackson, and the Honorable Beryl A. Howell at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Mr. Smith’s experience and familiarity with the judicial process bolsters his litigation practice.

Mr. Smith also held two internships at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) during his time in law school. He initially worked for EEOC’s Washington Field Office where he interviewed potential charging parties and investigated their claims of discrimination. Mr. Smith then went on to work for the Office of the Chair where he learned immensely from Chair Charlotte A. Burrows, and her staff, and assisted the Office of the Chair as Chair Burrows transitioned from Commissioner to Chair. Mr. Smith’s experiences with the EEOC provides our clients with invaluable insight for how to navigate their claims of discrimination.

Mr. Smith earned his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law, where he graduated with honors (Cum Laude). He earned his Bachelor of Arts from The State University of New York at Geneseo where he graduated with high honors (Magna Cum Laude) with a major in Political Science and a minor in Communication.
